VCON 37 2012 Preview

ABOUT VCON 37

"VCON is a weekend-long combination of playing, learning, brainstorming, and partying. We don't limit ourselves to one area of science fiction and fantasy experience. We celebrate the whole spectrum, which includes: literature and writingartmovies and TVmodels and collectablesgaming (video games, cards, board games, role playing) cosplay, comics & graphic novels, music, history and trivia, astronomy, space programs past and present, unusual science. We also like to explore the glue that holds it all together: us. Not just VCON (although we’d like to think we do our share) but all those with an interest for what lies beyond the status quo of reality." (From VCON 37)

Impression

If I have to describe in a word what is my general impression, I will say that it is unique. It contributes to different type of entertainment which is different from anime. I think it would be quite an enjoyable experience there. I look forward to see everyone there!

Cos & Effect 2012

August 24 to 26 @ University of British Columbia

ABOUT COS & EFFECT

Cos & Effect is an annual costume, cosplay, and alternative fashion convention that takes place in Vancouver BC. Featuring workshops, informational and fan-run panels, contests, competitions, dances, special guests, artists, vendors, and more. Unleash your creativity!

Impression

After being to this convention, the major difference I felt from Anime Revolution 2012 is the panels. It has way more rooms for an overall positive interaction with people. Although there people who been to other cons find panels boring, this convention is nothing like that. Most of the panels are very well planned. I am very impressed with panels, especially the one about pokemon. It completely changes my childhood impression. I didn't know the game can be this interesting. They seriously did an excellent job in those panels. I enjoyed the panels with my fullest energy to the end when I finally accidentally fell asleep in the panel room on the second day. I actually felt bad for to leave the panel before it ended. Overall, the convention is still a lot of fun despite the fact that there aren't a lot of vendors and main events. The panels are worth the money.

Who did we find here?

We found Derick Chiou from Prince of Wales Anime Club!
Anime: Steins;Gate
Character: Rintarou Okabe

Anime Revolution 2012

August 17-19 2012 @ Vancouver Convention Centre

Review may considered to be inappropriate.

ABOUT ANIME REVOLUTION

Anime Revolution is a brand new three-day convention located in Vancouver, BC. It caters to a wide range of activities, exhibits, panels, and performances. These include art, animation, comics, costuming, cultural displays, dance, gaming, musical performances, and others. The goal is to provide people of all ages with entertainment, education, and cultural exchange.

Impression

After being to Anime Revolution 2012, I am proud of living in Vancouver. This convention definitely has to potential to grow. They have extremely great shows at the main events room such as the walk off. I almost suffocate while I was laughing so hard. Even though some may find the walk off inappropriate, the only thing I can say is "What a great show!" Another thing that most people will pay attention to is the DEALERS. I find it amazingly big compare to any convention you can find in Vancouver. I couldn't resist not buying anything from them. I walked out the dealer's exhibition hall found out that I just spent more than a hundred bucks unconsciously. They have a great collection of anime DVDs, manga magazines, figures, costumes, swords, body pillows, and even some echhie mouse pads. Although the panels can be improved by having more spaces and room, Anime Revolution is definitely the finest convention that you can find in Vancouver.

Maid Cafe

Even though the food is pretty expensive, we all enjoy our time at the Maid Cafe! Anime Revolution sure did a good job of treating their guests. We also need to thank the amazing maids who volunteered for hours at Anime Revolution, so we can all have a good time while at the convention. here is a picture of my friend, Yiwei, who volunteered for hours at the Maid Cafe.

The Summer Festival 2012

July 21, 2012 @ SFU Burnaby, Convocation Mall

About The Summer Festival

The Summer Festival is an annual event hosted by the Altered Reality Club, SFU’s club for anime, cosplay, and gaming. Modelled after matsuri festivals in Japan, They deliver a day filled with carnival-style games, entertainment, artist and vendor booths, and food stalls. Participate in these fun activities for raffle tickets which can win either one of several door prizes, or the exciting chance to smash a watermelon on-stage! Attendance is absolutely FREE. They encourage cosplay or yukata!

Impression

The festival was quite entertaining, especially the contest. It is worth travelling one and a half hour to get there. I saw a lot of awesome cosplays and met amazing people. Their carnival-style games also handed out raffle tickets that have a chance to win great prizes. Moreover, there were a lot of awesome anime flyers such as poster, buttons, and arts. Even though I was a little disappointed about the fact that they don't have panels, I still had a lot of fun there.

Anime Evolution J-fest 2012

July 14, 2012 @ Douglas College

ABOUT J-FEST

J-fest is part of Anime Evolution, the premier event for anime, manga, gaming, and every kind of related fandom, in Vancouver BC. They invite passionate fans to this particular event where they will all share time discussing common interest.

Impression

After going to both J-fest ad Sakura-Con, I was shocked to see the differences. J-fest is a totally different type of convention. It is not only smaller, but also simple. However, I was quite fond of this experience. The panels were seriously great, especially the finals. The panel, "Who's line is it Anime?", is definitely something funny and exciting. I was glad that I brought my sister along with me. Moreover, the cosplays were amazing. I saw series of fantastic cosplays that I never seen in the big conventions. J-fest is a nice and neat festival that is good for people to have fun.

Pictures

As everyone is wondering what I have seen there, here is a photo album from Facebook taken by one of our member, Yiwei Dai! Hope everyone will like it.

After watching a Youtube video of this year's FanExpo, it changed my impression; there were series of Cosplay, Manga, Anime, and Figures. I was amazed by the shows and the interviews they did. I hope that when I go to Anime Revolution I can experience it myself, looking foreword to attending the convention.
